When is a complaint an emergency rather than a clinic visit?
Chest pain, breathlessness at rest, sudden weakness on one side, altered speech, a seizure, or uncontrolled bleeding are emergencies. Go to the nearest emergency department, do not wait for an appointment and do not drive yourself.
Why was I not given an antibiotic?
Because the illness was most likely viral, and an antibiotic would have done nothing except add side effects and contribute to resistance. If the picture changes, the plan changes.
Can I stop a medicine once I feel fine?
Ask first. Some medicines are meant to be stopped when symptoms settle, and others cause harm if stopped suddenly. The answer is specific to the medicine and to you.
How should I keep track of a chronic condition?
Keep one file with every report in date order and one current list of medicines with doses. Bring both to every visit, including visits to other doctors.
Is a teleconsultation as good as coming in?
For review of a known condition, discussing reports or a straightforward follow-up, often yes. Anything that needs examination needs to be seen in person, and we will tell you which it is.
How long should I wait before coming in with a fever?
That depends on age, other conditions and how the person is otherwise. A general rule is not a substitute for a conversation, so ask rather than wait on a number from the internet.
What do I do with reports from another hospital?
Bring them. Different laboratories use different reference ranges and methods, so comparing like with like matters, and a previous value gives a result meaning it would not have alone.
